Wearing a yellow and black costume, Gundala becomes the protector of the city and fights crime.
Popularity
One of the factors that makes Gundala popular is because it represents a strong spirit of heroism and justice. He not only faces ordinary criminals, but also tries hard to fight various social problems and injustices that exist in society. Through his adventures, Gundala often comments and criticizes social injustice, corruption and economic inequality that occur in Indonesia.
Apart from comic form, Gundala has also appeared in various other media adaptations. In 1981, Gundala appeared in his first feature film entitled “Gundala Putra Petir”. In 2019, director Joko Anwar released a new version of the film Gundala, which explored a darker and more complex side of the character. The film received a positive reception and garnered new popularity for Gundala.
Gundala’s presence is not only important for the Indonesian entertainment industry, but is also a marker of the development of the local superhero genre in Indonesia. With strong characters and an interesting story, Gundala has proven that Indonesia is also capable of creating superheroes that can be recognized and appreciated by international audiences.
